Lucky Star 13-14

By schneider

Unsurprisingly, there is very little to talk about pertaining to Lucky Star episodes. After you’ve stopped laughing from the gags, that’s it. There’s little sense in dwelling on them unless they contain some obscure reference, and these types aren’t that many anyways. To save space I’ve decided to review episodes 13-14 in one short entry.

Behold your new goddess, Minami.

Episode 13 is just another average episode: the only notable things here are the Yu-gi-oh jokes, Valentines’ stuff (including a very tsundere‘d Kagami), another Meito skit (albeit bland), Akira with drill ears, and a surprise ED by Minoru Shiraishi.

Episode 14 is marginally better: two new characters are introduced (Minami Iwasaki, a not-Nagato, and Yutaka Kobayakawa, who is even loli-er than Konata), game shows, more Minoru EDs (this time with a song that should be familiar to you), and some Cousin Yui goodness. That’s all. At least they’ve given Yutaka a good amount of screentime, which could be said less of Miyuki, who seems to have been relegated to the background once again.

Yutaka, who at this point on lives with Konata.

It seems that I’m not treating this show as how it’s supposed to be. Here I am, looking for plot and character development. Konata’s the same otaku we’ve all grown to worship, Tsukasa’s just as clueless as ever, Kagami never reveals her dere side, and Miyuki is just… a pretty bespectacled smart wallflower. At least in Haruhi, there were lots of things outside the fun stuff that were happening, and characters actually developed feelings for each other (I’m looking at you, Yuki). Taking away the plot and all the good stuff that comes with it, we have a show that’s funny and moe and… just that. Funny and moe. Lucky Star is a product of its own time, our time right now, but give or take a decade and people will just treat it as another of those moe shows that otaku culture would have probably outgrown then (though this would be debatable). Unless Minoru Shiraishi lands a really good role in the future and achieves fame, selling his penis to watchers would be fun but pointless. Or maybe they’re just exactly doing that. Who knows?

But these things aside, Lucky Star is really an enjoyable show. There is a part of me that just wants to watch it and fuck off with the rationalizing I normally do. It has made my day on numerous occasions, putting a smile on my face during some depressing times. I can give it that. However, the recall value leaves a lot to be desired, for me. I’ll just hope that Minami would elevate the show into awesome status. Really.

Best. Quote. Ever.

So what’s so good about Minami, you might ask? Well, she’s definitely not emotionless like Yuki (who has, even then, had developed emotions out of her proximity to Kyon). Her incredible self-deprecating courteousness is mistaken for lack of emotions. She’s just that kind and acquiescing. If you would hug her suddenly while passing by the corridors, she’ll probably just hold your arm and say something in the lines of “you’re embarrassing me” in her deadpan voice. And if you kissed her…

*overheats and explodes*

Anyways, that’s it for now.

Yes, boys and girls, this is one of the crazy Minoru EDs I’m talking about.
